East London Masterplan
Remembering the historic canals of London’s dockyards
Location: London, UK
Client: CBRE
Year: 2015
Site Area: 20 hectares
By looking to the past, an underlay of blue infrastructure inspired a way of re-connecting this site. A canal system that had been long forgotten was reinstated to reveal a unique landscape, to bring about a rich sense of place, and to provide a legible and beautiful way of linking the development.
URBAN worked with CBRE to put in place a public realm strategy for this East London site. The development was looked at in the whole to develop a strategy of space and routes, and to define a hierarchy of public realm that would connect the site within and without. Major moves included an urban beach, central greenway, and a canal-side high street, each acting as a key destination or route, and imbuing this area with a vital sense of place.
