Oxford Street District Placemaking Objectives
A new direction for London’s primary shopping destination
Location: London, UK
Client: Westminster City Council
Year: 2020
Site Area: 150 hectares
The quality of Oxford Street’s public realm has historically been challenged by the demands of vehicle use. However, a new direction for the transportation infrastructure reveals new opportunities for public realm and urban greening.
URBAN has developed landscape placemaking objectives for the Oxford Street District, comprising one of seven documents coordinated by Publica as guidance for Westminster City Council and contracted design teams in the future design development of its public realm.
These objectives seek to achieve a district-wide landscape masterplan for the area and the highest quality of design and delivery to create a greener and healthier city for everyone who lives in, visits, or works in the area. Key objectives support an increase in greenery and biodiversity in five historic garden squares and unlock more space for trees and urban greening within its public realm.
