Location: Suzhou, China
Client: Suzhou Industrial Park Urban Development
Year: 2011
Site Area: 24 hectares
Suzhou is a multifaceted city, known as “Venice of the East”, and “City of Gardens,” with 42% of the area covered in water. The new square proposed forms a focal point for social interaction, its elements expressing the modern dynamics of the city whilst remaining linked to the history and traditions of its population, including the daily influences of its waterscape.
In the charming historic old town there are still about 72 canals, which are bustling with boats and traditional barques. Suzhou has almost a 2500-year history and its character still remains, with the double-chessboard layout buildings. This unique structure has been maintained as the morphological framework for the Suzhou old city for centuries is now reflected in this new masterplan for the future.
The waterway system remains prominent in the proposals offering many benefits to daily use, including waterborne transport and beautification of the city landscapes, all of which are closely related to the life of its inhabitants. The project context is a place of remarkable commercial activity, comfortable living, and recreational opportunities, built on an amazing historical landscape fabric, that has always expressed a harmonious relationship between people, industry and nature.
