The Nest
A window to local wildlife
Location: South Essex, UK
Client: Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA)
Year: 2021 – ongoing
Area: 16.73 sqm
In creating opportunities for visitors to safely enjoy the beauty of the local wetlands near East Tilbury, South Essex, proposals for Phase 1 of the SEE Park Central Thames Marshlands Pathfinder project includes this bespoke bird hide.
Referred to as the Nest because of its distinct shape, the design will provide a valuable resource for those visiting local wildlife reserves or just as a rest-bite for pedestrians and cyclists travelling paths connected by the Phase 1 Pathfinder project.
Constructed from timber, its external cladding reflects that of a traditional timber boat construction, with long apertures providing inconspicuous viewing of local wetlands and its wildlife. Internal space is flexible and, when not used for daily bird watching, can also be used as a classroom by local wildlife groups. Interpretation panels inside provide a resource for the display of information on local bird species, other wildlife, and native plants. A sliding door provides a means to enclose the space when required and at the top of the Nest, a green roof provides additional biodiverse habitat for local species.
