Hengrove Park
A park at the heart of a new neighbourhood
Location: Bristol, UK
Client: Hill Group
Year: 2021
Site Area: 49 hectares
As part of the Hill team putting forward developer partner proposals to Bristol City Council, URBAN contributed masterplan and landscape proposals for the 49-hectare site at Hengrove Park, Bristol.
As a landscape led approach, some 26.6 hectares were assigned to parkland, green corridors, play, sport, habitat, public space and storm water attenuation with the remaining designated for residential use.
A key part of the proposals was to establish connections between parks, streets, and green corridors through Hengrove to provide a network for pedestrians and cyclists to link safely with friends, community facilities, public transport, sports, and leisure. Together they form habitat byways for wildlife, manage surface water runoff through swales, lagoons, and ponds, reflect on the history of the site, and celebrate the culture and diversity of the neighbourhood.
Hengrove Park’s community will be enriched by a varied range of inclusive, recreational, and cultural activities set within a natural and habitat-diverse setting. Amongst the features of the site, existing green space includes the remnants of the Whitchurch Airport runway closed in 1957, currently a popular destination for cycling and roller-skating. A reflection of the runway has been incorporated into the parkland proposals with the inclusion of a memorial feature to celebrate the site’s former use, memories and dynamic.
