MediaCity UK

Public realm to inspire a community

Location: Salford, UK

Client: PEEL L&P

Year: 2023

Site Area: 13 hectares

MediaCity, Salford’s home for media and creative industries, offers a dramatic setting and destination for its visitors and workforce, including a substantial public realm offer, a generous park and piazza, the lure of waterfront views, and unique architectural styles to admire. Phase 2 of its development reveals its true ambition as a place, to transform it from primarily a business and visitor destination into a neighbourhood, and integral to this, diversifying its public realm and landscape appeal into a wholistic, living community.

In support of MediaCity’s Regeneration Framework, URBAN prepared a Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy identifying a range of opportunities to rejuvenate existing landscape alongside creating an extensive network of new car free public realm and open space within its framework character areas, including significant expansion of its residential community.

The Framework establishes the creation of an exciting network of high quality public realm, green ideals, and urban space, lively and full of activity. Currently focused alongside existing waterways, the strategy looks to improve upon the energy and attractiveness of these existing waterfront destinations and extend them northwards into growing character areas and emerging neighbourhoods. Creating attractive, navigable routes with diverse spaces for people to enjoy, get closer to nature, and absorb the creativity of this unique destination time and time again.
